This past week we started on the back deck...FINALLY!! Wednesday we drilled the holes in the ground for the posts. Took a little longer than expected. As they were using the auger to dig, they hit our sewer line. Chris then had to fix that before we could set the posts. We ended up working late by truck lights to get the posts set before Thursday.
Thursday morning we got our forms set for concrete to be poured that afternoon. It was so hot Thursday afternoon. Plus we poured on the sunny side of the house. The concrete driver ended up adding over 60 gallons of water to the mix. We poured in four sections and by the time they got to the last section, the first section had setup so fast that we had to add water on top just to get the float across it. It was the worst concrete job we have ever done. Pouring concrete in the summer sucks!!!
Friday night we had our family out and I fixed a big meal, an early thank you meal for the weekend. It was a very nice evening. We all took turns taking rides on the four wheeler. And between my dad and Jon, they got our yard mowed. It looks nice, we are going to invite everyone out more often (when the yard needs mowed!!!)
Saturday morning we started early, knowing it was going to get hot. And it did!! There wasn't much wind and by 1:00 the sun was beating down on us. It was awful. But we got the deck floor done, the steps and part of the railing done before we had to quit. At 4:00 we had a storm move in with lightning. If it hadn't been for the lightning, we would have kept working and probably would have had it done.
Sunday we started about 9:00. We got the steps done and railing, put on the ballasts and built a step coming out the door. We finished at 1:00. It looks awesome and with all of the help we had, it really didn't take that long. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Madi's Drawings
I left Madi alone with a pen for 10 minutes while I downloaded some pictures the other day. What a mistake.
I thought it was kind of funny at first. I was taking these pictures when her dad walked in from work. He took her and I went to pick up the pen and paper and found that she not only drew all over her legs and hands, but she had also drew all over our recliner and couch. She was in big trouble. I put her in the tub and got the ink off her and then started on the couch and chair. As I am cleaning she comes over and asks,
Madi: "Watchya doin mommy?"
Me: "Cleaning your pen marks off the chair Madi." "Madi you draw on paper only, not on the furniture, this was naughty."
Madi: "Oh, missed a spot!" pointing to the pen mark on the chair.
What a stinker. Chris and I are dying with laughter and trying to hide it.

Monkeys and Bears and Goats...Oh My!
Yesterday Madi and I went to the local zoo. I was tired of being cooped up in the house and it gave Madi a couple of hours of doing something different for a change. It's a really nice zoo, not too busy and not terribly big, just right for us. Madi walked most of it herself, I had to carry her a couple of times and we stopped and rested a couple of times. Last year when we went she was a little scared of the monkeys. But she did good this year. They weren't very active, they just sat there, but fortunately one was sitting close to the glass so we could see them. Madi is really into saying her emotions right now. So when she saw the monkey just sitting there, she sat on the bench and sighs and says "Madi's sad." Oh so pitiful. I asked her why she was sad and she said "the monkey is sad." He did look pretty sad sitting there, but I think monkeys always look sad. She is so perceptive.
We saw all sorts of animals and I took pictures (of course). Now we can look at the pictures and name the different animals. Good learning opportunity. There were a couple of bears and they were both right up at the fence. The first bear climbed into his watering hole and was getting cooled down and Madi said he was swimming like her. We went to the next bear and he was really close. I asked Madi if she could see the bear. She looks at me says, "that's not a bear, that's Boog." He's from the movie Open Season (really cute movie if you haven't seen it). We then went over and rested at the bears viewing area. She starts crawling around on the bench and says she's walking like a bear.
Before we get to the bears Madi keeps telling me "Madi needs to go home." Which means I have had enough, I'm tired, let's go. But we hadn't even gotten to the Kids Country where we can feed farm animals. I wanted to go there last because I was afraid we would never get out of there if we went first, but I didn't think she would poop out on me that quickly. But as soon as she saw the cow, she had her second wind. So we fed the goats and a llama and the cow. The goats are a little demanding with the food and they get pretty riled up. One of the goats was pretty scary. Every time Madi gave him a piece of food he would bang his horns on the gate. I took some video of her feeding them and after watching when I got home, that goat was pretty dangerous. I almost thought he got her fingers but she never said he hurt her.
It was a fun morning. I thought it would poop her out enough she would sleep all afternoon. But the little stinker took a short nap. I don't know how that always happens. We do nothing and she takes a long nap, I go out and try to wear her out and she takes a short nap. No figuring her out.

Last weekend, we finally got some work done around the house. Chris went out and got me a garden tiller (I had been asking him for one for awhile). We were able to get the ground worked up in front of the house and all leveled off. It looks so nice and finished finally. The native grass is working itself closer and closer towards the house. This fall we will probably till it back up and get some heartier grass planted. We also spent all day Sunday getting the rest of the siding caulked. What a relief to finally get that done. Every time the wind was strong we cringed hoping that it wouldn't tear anymore siding down. And the flapping noise was awful. But we had some pretty good winds and rain overnight and no problems, didn't hear a thing.
We were going to start on the back deck this weekend. But nobody in town keeps the long boards we need on hand so we had to order them. They will be in on Monday, how convenient. So I guess next weekend is deck building weekend. If you don't have anything to do, we could use the help, ha ha! No plans so far for this weekend, at least that I know of (I usually find out five minutes before we do something though.)

Back from the Lake
We had a fun couple of days at the lake. The water was calm Tuesday and Wednesday and a little overcast on Tuesday. Made for nice boating weather. Madi loves riding in the boat. She woke up Wednesday morning and the first thing she said is "Madi ride in Papa's boat, ride in boat all the time." Then she ended up falling back to sleep. Probably dreamt about boating.
Dad took Jason, Tabatha and I out Wednesday morning to do some fishing. I didn't have very high expectations. In the past we would go out and never catch a fish. Within five minutes of dropping our lines, I caught the first fish, a white bass. We then caught four more within the first 30-45 minutes. It was a lot of fun!
But I was ready to come home. Madi didn't sleep well at night and I am just exhausted. Happy Friday!!

July Fun
Chris is getting around much better. A week ago Monday he had a cortisone shot in his lower back and it finally gave him some relief. He still has days when he is a little sore but at least the pain is tolerable. He is super busy at work right now and short handed. He can't seem to find anyone that actually wants to work and will show up. Very frustrating. If you know anyone, give Chris a call. Luckily, we still have Ryan working for us and Bob has been working too. Bob has been a huge help, especially when Chris was not able to work.
We really haven't been doing much. We got Madi's swimming pool setup and most days we spend outside playing. It makes the heat halfway bearable. We've also made some trips to the lake lately. Madi loves riding in Papa's boat. And of course anything we do where she can get in the water she also loves. I can't keep her out of the water.
We had a great Fourth of July weekend. Thursday night we drove to McPherson and got fireworks. Friday night we went out to Ryan's land north west of Salina and had a barbecue and set off fireworks. Madi had a great time. There were lots of kids to play with. Saturday we spent the day out at the lake. Madi played in her pool out there and then we went out in the boat and watched the fireworks. Probably the best fireworks display I've seen. It was really awesome and it's so fun having fireworks on by birthday. Growing up I always had fireworks for my birthday when we went to visit my grandma in Emporia. So it was really special to have them on my birthday this year. Madi did pretty good with the fireworks. She got scared a couple of times, but some were really loud. Plus she was exhausted and ready to go to bed. 10:00 fireworks is a little past her bedtime!
I hope everyone had a wonderful, safe 4th of July. Madi and I are headed for the lake for the next 3 days. My parents and brother are off this week, so we are going to spend sometime with them and get some more water playing in!
